“Our greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”
William James
Do you find yourself collecting thoughts and thinking that you have to keep them all? That’s our worry emotion + our left, analyzing brain in overwhelm. Thousands of thoughts appear every day, sometimes relevant to our tasks, yet many times not at all. They can come from anywhere and nowhere and they can make you feel like you’re in a parade that you never asked to appear in.
When you feel like that last statement, it’s your clue to take a step back and breathe deeply. Those thoughts aren’t who you are. They’re just thoughts. And just like a breeze that comes out of nowhere, thoughts can come up the same way. Perhaps you just stepped into that breeze and the wonderful thing is that you can just as easily step out of it. Then you get to decide to let those thoughts (stressful and unstressful) go. You can even visualize letting them go off in that same breeze, or put them into a fun balloon (you pick the color) and watch them sail off. (no one ever said that letting things go had to be stressful work so put some fun into it)
It’s okay to ask if a thought is productive or helpful. Just know, if you don’t get a ‘yes’ immediately, let it go. And breathe, deeply, several times, until you feel yourself shift into a peaceful calm. You don’t need to claim ownership to them, otherwise they begin to own you and run your life. You don’t need that on any day.
If you find that you need some extra help with letting those thoughts go, let me know and we can schedule a session. We all deserve some peace and calmness in our lives.
Peace!
